Gilesgate and Belmont
East of the city, with older terraces near Gilesgate bank, inter-war homes and larger post-war estates at Belmont. Plenty of sloping frontages.
Newton Hall, Framwellgate Moor and Pity Me
North of the city: the large Newton Hall estate, plus older streets at Framwellgate Moor and newer homes at Pity Me. Many 1970s and 1980s drives are due for replacement.
Neville's Cross, Crossgate Moor and Merryoaks
West of the centre, with inter-war semis and detached houses, many set above or below the road. Sloping drives are common.
The city centre
Georgian and Victorian houses in and around the conservation area. Front gardens are usually small, and changes may need permission.
Shincliffe and Sherburn Village
Villages to the south-east, with stone cottages, newer homes and some larger properties. Level plots in Shincliffe suit gravel.
Bowburn, Brandon, Langley Moor and Ushaw Moor
Former pit villages with terraces, council-built homes and newer estates. Many frontages can take a drive with a lowered kerb.
Brancepeth and Witton Gilbert
Smaller villages with larger stone houses and long drives.
